The 5-Minute Brownie

The 5-Minute BrownieI'm not a baker. Baking is much too technical for me. The minute "rules" and measurements are applied, the less likely I am to follow them. But as a special treat to my sister on her birthday, I've decided to actually take notes and measure, and in doing so, launch and unveil my "5-minute" dessert recipes, beginning with this 5-Minute Brownie. But first, a little background:It all started with the 5-minute cookie. It was simple, really. My sister Jenn and I would find ourselves in the kitchen after a long night out or a seemingly even longer night in, seeking comfort in the contents of our parents' kitchen cupboards and fridge. And while Jenn would be making bizarre concoctions like microwaved cheddar cheese slices in pita pockets, I had other sweeter eats in mind. And it was always a cookie. Jenn would turn around and bam! there would be a giant chocolate chip cookie on a plate, still warm from the oven. This instant cookie became crowned the 5-minute cookie as I would take no longer than five minutes to throw all the ingredients together in one bowl before placing it into the oven. No measurements, no precise calculations. And there was none of that arduous transferring of cookies to sheet, to oven, to cooling rack and then repeat. Who has time for that? And besides, sometimes you need to be a little selfish and make a cookie just for yourself and your sister. So Jenn, who has not yet experienced the 5-Minute Brownie (as I've been busy perfecting it in Fieldhouse Kitchen for the past few months and trying to actually measure things out so that others can make it), consider this recipe my birthday gift to you. Here's what you'll need for the 5-Minute Brownie:5-Minute Brownie Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.Whisk together all your ingredients in a bowl.Mixing the Brownie BatterPour the batter into the pan of your choice (muffin tins, cake or bread pan, whatever you like). You're the captain in your kitchen, and you can do no wrong with the 5-minute.Brownie BatterPouring the Brownie BatterPlace your pan into the oven and bake for 15-25 minutes or until a fork can be cleanly inserted into the center. This will of course depend on the pan you choose. The deeper the dish (like the mini loaf pan pictured, the longer the cooking time will be). If you need your chocolate fix ASAP, use a shallow pan.Cooked BrownieStay tuned for more 5-minute creations to come.Fudgy BrownieFieldhouse Fun Fact: I've found the 5-minute tastes best when served with two spoons, late at night, in the kitchen, with your best wingman.
