The BBC
Behold the Internet’s favorite BBC recipe — because it’s as close to the real thing as possible.
Here's what you'll need for Fieldhouse Kitchen's BBC (serves 2):
1 ripe banana
4 oz. Baileys Irish Cream
2 oz. coconut rum (Malibu, Cruzan, Parrot Bay, etc.)
2 oz. dark rum (for floaters on top)
3/4 cup of ice
If you’re looking to make a BBC, you may be interested to know about its storied history.
Once upon a time, there was a small Caribbean-themed seafood shack named Cyril's on the side of a long stretch of highway connecting the Hampton villages with the 'end of the world' (Montauk).
It was a no-frills bar with plastic furniture and direct views of the LIRR train that would rumble past. It was a seemingly endless summer party skippered by Cyril — an Irishman from Dublin with a jovial presence — and fueled by his famous boozy concoction: the BBC.
Although skeptical at first of any kind of sugary cocktails, I was hooked at first sip. Yes, it’s a dessert. Yes, it will transport you to the isles. And yes, you will likely end up in the ocean after two. I always did.
I can see how the drink Cyril made famous in the Caribbean was a hit at New York's premier summer destination. The BBC is a frozen blended mixture of Baileys, banana liquor, piña colada mix, white rum, and a banana. It's served with a 'floater,' or two shots of dark rum on top.
My recipe for the BBC involves fewer ingredients and a bit less sugar (though this drink is not for the calorie-conscious). Consider it a transporting summer milkshake for adult.
Set the dark rum aside, and blend all other ingredients in a blender until the mixture becomes slushy. You can adjust the amount of ice as necessary.
Pour a shot or two of dark rum on top and enjoy. I find BBCs taste best with Bob Marley playing in the background.
You can serve your BBC in a frosted glass or in a plastic cup with a straw — no frills, nothing fancy... Just as Cyril likes to serve it.
Also, while I have you, if you’re interested in keeping the party going, I’d love to introduce you to my newly launched Port wine exploration project called Starboard.
